Chino Valley Fire District first responders demonstrated CPR techniques last week at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
In commemoration of American Heart Month, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and the Chino Valley Fire District (CVFD) hosted a CPR demo last week. The demonstration taught first-hand CPR training to resuscitate and stabilize a victim until health professionals arrive. The CVFD has seen a consistent improvement each year since the initiative began. From 2018 to 2021, its survival rates increased from 16.7% to 62.5%, while state and national averages have remained relatively flat, under 30% (according to Utstein criteria*).
Each year, more than 350,000 EMS-assessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. According to the American Heart Association, about 90% of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.
